Ohtani's amazing 25 game dash from 40/40 to 50/50

Through Aug. 21, Ohtani had 39 HRs & 39 SBs. In his next 25 games he hit 12 HRs and stole 12 bases (those levels are very rare for a 25 game span as I explain later).

It started in spectacular fashion with the game on Aug. 23. He stole his 40th base in the 2nd inning of a game against the Rays in LA. His 40th HR was a walk-off grand slam in that game.

It ended, incredibly, in even more spectacular fashion on Sept. 19 in Miami. He came into the game with 48 HRs & 49 SBs. He hit 3 HRs and stole 2 bases. He was then at 51 HRs & 51 SBs. He also had 10 RBIs, the most ever for a leadoff man. Throwing in two doubles and a single, he ended up with 17 TBs.

The table below shows his stats for the 25 games from Aug. 23-Sept. 19:

Note that Ohtani was not thrown out trying to steal even once in this 25 game span.

How rare is having 12+ HRs & 12+ SBs in a 25 game span? Only 3 players have ever done it. They were:

Shohei Ohtani
Fernando Tatis
Eric Davis

Ohtani and Davis have several overlapping spans. Davis had one span that included 14 HRs & 12 SBs. Then another that had 12 HRs & 14 SBs.

Ohtani had a 25 game span, from Aug. 27 to Sept. 22 with 12 HRs & 15 SBs.

Only 16 players have done 10+ HR & 10+ SBs in a 25 game span. Click here to see that list.
