All data from Stathead. This first graph shows HBP/(PA - IBB) in MLB since 1949. There has been an upward trend since the mid 1980s.
But what if the trend is just part of an overall increase in wildness? The next graph shows MLB HBP as a fraction of non-intentional walks since 1949. That is still going up. So HBPs are going up faster than walks. It might not just be overall wildness.
